What Is Marry Me Chicken Pasta?

Marry Me Chicken Pasta is a creamy chicken pasta recipe made with juicy pan-seared chicken breasts, garlic, heavy cream, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, Italian herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, and perfectly cooked pasta.

The playful name comes from the joke that it’s so delicious it could inspire a marriage proposal after the very first bite.

Whether that’s true or not, one thing is certain, this creamy pasta recipe has become one of the internet’s favorite comfort foods, and it’s easy to see why.

Unlike some cream-based pasta dishes that can feel overly rich, this recipe strikes the perfect balance of flavors.

  • Fresh garlic adds bold, savory depth.
  • Parmesan cheese creates a silky, cheesy sauce.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes bring a sweet and tangy contrast.
  • Italian herbs tie everything together beautifully.

Every forkful is creamy, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying.

Every bite is loaded with juicy chicken, creamy Parmesan sauce, and tender pasta.

Why This Marry Me Chicken Pasta Recipe Works Every Time

I’ve tested several versions of this recipe over the years, and a few simple techniques make all the difference.

Instead of cooking everything together from the start, the chicken is first seasoned and pan-seared until beautifully golden brown. Those flavorful browned bits left behind in the skillet become the foundation of the creamy sauce.

That one simple step adds a rich, restaurant-style flavor you simply can’t get by simmering the chicken directly in the sauce.

Another reason this recipe works so well is the consistency of the sauce. It coats every piece of pasta without becoming overly thick or sticky.

The result is a creamy, velvety pasta dish that’s indulgent enough for a date night but simple enough for a busy weeknight dinner.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Marry Me Chicken Pasta

There are countless creamy chicken pasta recipes online, but this one stands out because it’s both simple and impressive.

Here’s why you’ll want to add it to your dinner rotation:

  • Ready in about 30 minutes
  • Everything comes together in one skillet after cooking the pasta
  • Uses simple ingredients you can find in almost any grocery store
  • Rich, creamy Parmesan sauce packed with flavor
  • Perfect for weeknight dinners, date nights, meal prep, or entertaining
  • Leftovers taste just as delicious the next day
  • Beginner-friendly and easy to follow

Whether you’re cooking for your family or preparing a cozy dinner for two, this recipe delivers restaurant-quality results without the restaurant price.

The Secret to the Creamy Marry Me Chicken Pasta Sauce

Fresh garlic creates a flavorful base, while chicken broth adds savory depth without making the sauce too heavy. Heavy cream gives the sauce its silky texture, and freshly grated Parmesan cheese melts into a rich, cheesy finish. To balance the richness, sun-dried tomatoes add little bursts of sweetness and tang, creating a creamy sauce that’s comforting and full of flavor.

Is Marry Me Chicken Pasta Really Worth the Hype?

Absolutely.

Food trends come and go, but few recipes remain popular year after year.

Marry Me Chicken Pasta has earned its place because it’s built on classic flavors that people already love:

  • Creamy garlic sauce
  • Tender, juicy chicken
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Perfectly cooked pasta
  • Italian herbs
  • Sun-dried tomatoes

It’s comforting enough for a casual family dinner, yet elegant enough to serve when guests come over.

That’s exactly the kind of recipe every home cook should have in their collection.

Ingredients for Marry Me Chicken Pasta including chicken, Parmesan cheese, pasta, garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes
Simple pantry staples come together to create this restaurant-worthy pasta.

Ingredients for the Best Marry Me Chicken Pasta

One of the best things about this recipe is that it uses everyday ingredients while delivering incredible flavor.

For the Chicken

  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Italian seasoning
  • Olive oil

For the Creamy Sauce

  • Butter
  • Fresh garlic
  • Chicken broth
  • Heavy cream
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Fresh basil
  • Fresh parsley

For the Pasta

Penne is my favorite choice because it holds the creamy sauce beautifully, but you can also use:

  • Rigatoni
  • Rotini
  • Fusilli
  • Fettuccine
  • Farfalle

Each of these pasta shapes captures the rich Parmesan sauce, ensuring every bite is packed with flavor.

Choosing the Best Chicken for Marry Me Chicken Pasta

The chicken is one of the stars of this Marry Me Chicken Pasta recipe, so choosing the right cut makes a big difference.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are the traditional choice because they cook quickly, stay juicy when prepared properly, and slice beautifully over the pasta.

If you prefer darker meat, boneless, skinless chicken thighs are an excellent alternative. They’re naturally tender, flavorful, and a little more forgiving if slightly overcooked.

For the best results, try to use chicken pieces that are similar in thickness. This helps them cook evenly and prevents some pieces from drying out before others are fully cooked.

Pro Tip: If your chicken breasts are thick, gently pound them with a meat mallet or rolling pin until they’re an even thickness. This reduces cooking time and helps keep the chicken tender and juicy.

Why Fresh Parmesan Makes This Creamy Chicken Pasta Even Better

When it comes to Marry Me Chicken Pasta, freshly grated Parmesan cheese is one ingredient worth using.

Fresh Parmesan melts smoothly into the sauce, creating the rich, velvety texture that makes this dish so irresistible.

Pre-shredded Parmesan often contains anti-caking agents that can prevent it from melting properly, leaving the sauce grainy instead of silky.

If possible, buy a block of Parmesan and grate it just before cooking. It’s a small step that adds a big boost in flavor and texture.

Why Sun-Dried Tomatoes Are the Secret Ingredient in Marry Me Chicken Pasta

If you’ve never cooked with sun-dried tomatoes before, this recipe is the perfect introduction.

Unlike fresh tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes have a concentrated flavor that’s naturally sweet with just the right amount of tanginess.

Rather than overpowering the sauce, they balance the richness of the cream and Parmesan, adding little bursts of flavor in every bite.

For the best results, use oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes. They’re softer, more flavorful, and blend beautifully into the creamy sauce.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

One of the reasons I love making this easy Marry Me Chicken Pasta recipe is that it doesn’t require any special equipment.

If you have these basic kitchen essentials, you’re ready to cook.

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Large pot for boiling pasta
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cheese grater
  • Tongs for turning the chicken

Using a large skillet is especially important because you’ll finish the pasta directly in the sauce. This helps every piece of pasta absorb all that creamy, cheesy goodness.

Easy Ingredient Substitutions for Marry Me Chicken Pasta

One of the best things about this recipe is how flexible it is.

If you’re missing an ingredient, don’t worry. There are plenty of easy substitutions that still produce delicious results.

Chicken Substitutions for Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are the classic choice, but you can also use:

  • Boneless chicken thighs
  • Leftover rotisserie chicken
  • Grilled chicken strips

If you’re using cooked chicken, simply stir it into the sauce near the end of cooking so it stays tender.

Best Pasta for Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Penne is my personal favorite because the creamy sauce fills every tube.

Other great options include:

  • Rigatoni
  • Rotini
  • Fusilli
  • Bowtie pasta
  • Fettuccine
  • Linguine

Whichever pasta you choose, cook it until al dente (firm to the bite). It will continue cooking slightly after it’s added to the hot sauce.

Cream Substitutions for Creamy Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Heavy cream creates the rich, luxurious texture this recipe is known for.

If you’d like a lighter version, you can substitute:

  • Half-and-half
  • Evaporated milk
  • Cooking cream

Keep in mind that lighter dairy products will produce a thinner sauce, but the flavor will still be delicious.

Parmesan Cheese Substitutions

Fresh Parmesan delivers the smoothest, richest sauce.

And If you don’t have Parmesan on hand, Pecorino Romano is a great substitute.

Since Pecorino is naturally saltier, taste the sauce before adding any extra salt.

Sun-Dried Tomato Substitutions

Sun-dried tomatoes are one of the signature ingredients in Marry Me Chicken Pasta, but if they’re not your favorite, you can easily swap them out.

Try using:

  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Baby spinach
  • Sautéed mushrooms

Each option adds its own unique flavor while keeping the dish creamy and satisfying.

Herb Substitutions

Fresh basil and parsley brighten the rich cream sauce and add a burst of freshness.

If you don’t have fresh herbs available, dried Italian seasoning works perfectly.

Just remember that dried herbs are more concentrated, so use a little less than you would fresh herbs.

How to Make Marry Me Chicken Pasta

This recipe comes together quickly, so it’s helpful to prepare all your ingredients before you begin cooking.

Having everything measured, chopped, and ready to go makes the process smooth and stress-free.

Prepare the Pasta and Chicken

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil.

Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions until it’s al dente.

Before draining, reserve about 1 cup of the pasta water.

This starchy water is perfect for adjusting the consistency of the sauce later if needed.

Drain the pasta and set it aside while you prepare the chicken and sauce.

Step 2: Season the Chicken

Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.

Season both sides generously with:

  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Italian seasoning

Gently press the seasonings into the chicken so they stick well during cooking.

This creates a beautifully seasoned crust that adds incredible flavor to the finished dish.

Step 3: Sear the Chicken

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Once the oil is hot, carefully place the seasoned chicken into the skillet.

Cook for about 5 to 6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness, until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked.

Try not to move the chicken around while it’s cooking.

Allowing it to sear undisturbed helps develop that rich golden crust that’s packed with flavor.

Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate and let it rest while you prepare the creamy sauce.

Resting the chicken allows the juices to redistribute, keeping every bite tender and juicy.

Make the Creamy Parmesan Sauce

Step 4: Build the Flavor Base for Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Reduce the heat to medium.

Add the butter to the same skillet you used to cook the chicken. As it melts, use a wooden spoon to scrape up the flavorful browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan.

Those caramelized bits are packed with flavor and become the foundation of the creamy sauce.

Next, stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, just until fragrant.

Tip: Be careful not to burn the garlic, as burnt garlic can give the sauce a bitter taste.

Step 5: Make the Creamy Marry Me Chicken Pasta Sauce

Pour the chicken broth into the skillet and stir well.

Let it simmer for about 2 minutes so the flavors begin to develop.

Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously.

Once the cream is warm, gradually add the freshly grated Parmesan cheese, stirring until it’s completely melted.

The sauce should become smooth, creamy, and glossy.

Now add:

  • Chopped sun-dried tomatoes
  • Italian seasoning
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Allow the sauce to simmer gently for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

As it cooks, it will naturally thicken into a rich, velvety sauce.

Finish the Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Step 6: Add the Chicken Back to the Creamy Pasta Sauce

Slice the rested chicken into strips or bite-sized pieces.

Return the chicken to the skillet, along with any juices that collected on the plate.

Those flavorful juices help make the sauce even richer.

Let everything simmer together for 2 to 3 minutes so the chicken absorbs the creamy Parmesan sauce.

Fresh basil and Parmesan cheese add the perfect finishing touch.

Step 7: Toss Everything Together

Add the cooked pasta directly to the skillet.

Using tongs or a large spoon, gently toss everything together until every piece of pasta is coated in the creamy sauce.

If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a little of the reserved pasta water until you reach your preferred consistency.

The starch in the pasta water helps create a silky, restaurant-style sauce without watering it down.

Finish with freshly chopped basil and parsley for a burst of freshness and color.

Tips for the Best Marry Me Chicken Pasta

A few simple techniques can make the difference between a good pasta dish and one that’s truly unforgettable.

Don’t Rush the Chicken

Let the chicken cook undisturbed until it develops a beautiful golden-brown crust before flipping it.

That caramelization adds incredible flavor to both the chicken and the sauce.

Grate Your Own Parmesan

Freshly grated Parmesan melts much more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.

It creates the rich, velvety sauce that makes this Marry Me Chicken Pasta so delicious.

Don’t Forget the Pasta Water

Before draining the pasta, reserve at least 1 cup of the cooking water.

It’s one of the easiest ways to thin the sauce while keeping it creamy and glossy.

Keep the Heat Low

Once you’ve added the heavy cream, avoid letting the sauce boil.

A gentle simmer is all you need.

High heat can cause dairy to separate and become grainy.

Taste Before Adding Salt

Parmesan cheese is naturally salty.

Always taste the finished sauce before adding any extra salt.

Let the Chicken Rest

After cooking, let the chicken rest for several minutes before slicing.

This helps lock in the juices, keeping every bite tender and flavorful.

Delicious Marry Me Chicken Pasta Variations

Once you’ve mastered the classic recipe, it’s easy to customize it with your favorite ingredients.

Here are a few delicious variations to try.

Add Spinach

For an easy way to include more vegetables, stir a few handfuls of fresh baby spinach into the sauce just before adding the pasta.

The spinach wilts in less than a minute and blends perfectly into the creamy sauce.

Make It Spicy

If you enjoy a little heat, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or sprinkle in a pinch of chili flakes.

The extra spice pairs beautifully with the creamy Parmesan sauce.

Then add Mushrooms

Sauté sliced mushrooms after removing the chicken from the skillet.

They’ll absorb all the flavorful browned bits left in the pan, adding an earthy richness to the dish.

Try Shrimp Instead of Chicken

Seafood lovers can easily swap the chicken for shrimp.

Season the shrimp the same way, then cook them for about 2 to 3 minutes per side until pink.

Since shrimp cooks quickly, this version comes together even faster.

Use a Different Pasta

Although penne is a favorite for this recipe, the creamy sauce works well with many pasta shapes.

Try using:

  • Rigatoni
  • Rotini
  • Fusilli
  • Bowtie pasta
  • Linguine
  • Fettuccine

Choose whatever you already have in your pantry.

Also add Crispy Bacon

A sprinkle of crispy chopped bacon over the finished pasta adds smoky flavor and a satisfying crunch.

It’s a simple addition that takes this comforting meal to the next level.

What to Serve with Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Because this dish is rich and creamy, pairing it with lighter sides creates a well-balanced meal.

Garlic Bread

Warm garlic bread is perfect for soaking up every last drop of the creamy Parmesan sauce.

Fresh Green Salad

A simple salad made with lettuce, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette adds freshness that balances the richness of the pasta.

Roasted Vegetables

Roasted vegetables are a delicious side for Marry Me Chicken Pasta.

Some great options include:

  • Broccoli
  • Asparagus
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Zucchini
  • Green beans

Roasting brings out their natural sweetness while adding a slight crispness.

Steamed Vegetables

If you prefer something lighter, steamed broccoli, carrots, or green beans make excellent side dishes.

Homemade Dinner Rolls

Soft dinner rolls are perfect for mopping up every bit of the creamy sauce.

How to Store Marry Me Chicken Pasta

One of the best things about Marry Me Chicken Pasta is that it tastes just as delicious the next day.

If you have leftovers, storing them properly will help preserve the creamy texture and rich flavor.

Allow the pasta to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.

Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

As the pasta rests, the flavors continue to develop, making leftovers even more flavorful.

Can You Freeze Marry Me Chicken Pasta?

Yes! While cream-based sauces can separate slightly after freezing, this recipe still freezes well with a little extra care.

To freeze:

  • Let the pasta cool completely.
  • Transfer it to freezer-safe containers or freezer bags.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months.

For the best texture, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

How to Reheat Marry Me Chicken Pasta

Creamy pasta tends to thicken after being refrigerated, but it’s easy to restore its smooth, silky consistency.

Reheat on the Stovetop

Add the pasta to a skillet over low heat.

Stir in a splash of:

  • Milk
  • Heavy cream
  • Chicken broth

Gently stir until the sauce becomes creamy again and the pasta is heated through.

Reheat in the Microwave

Transfer the pasta to a microwave-safe bowl.

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk before heating.

Cover the bowl loosely and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until hot.

Avoid overheating, as this can dry out the chicken and cause the sauce to separate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Making Marry Me Chicken Pasta

This recipe is beginner-friendly, but avoiding a few common mistakes will help you achieve restaurant-quality results every time.

Overcooking the Chicken

Chicken breasts cook quickly.

Leaving them in the skillet for too long can make them dry instead of juicy.

For perfectly cooked chicken, use a meat thermometer if you have one. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C). For more food safety guidance and recommended cooking temperatures, refer to the USDA Safe Minimum Internal Temperature Chart.

Using Pre-Shredded Parmesan

Freshly grated Parmesan melts much more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.

Pre-packaged cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can leave your sauce grainy instead of silky.

Overcooking the Pasta

Cook the pasta until it’s al dente.

Remember, it will continue cooking slightly after it’s added to the hot sauce.

Overcooked pasta can become soft and lose its texture.

Boiling the Cream Sauce

Once you’ve added the heavy cream, lower the heat.

A gentle simmer is all you need.

Boiling cream can cause the sauce to separate and lose its smooth, velvety consistency.

Forgetting to Save the Pasta Water

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make.

Before draining the pasta, reserve at least 1 cup of the cooking water.

The starch in the pasta water helps loosen the sauce while keeping it creamy and glossy.

It’s a simple trick that makes a big difference.
